The Trooper Inn Petersfield
Situated at the highest point in Hampshire, in the heart of the countryside, the Trooper is one of the county's finest pubs. The first bricks of this charming Inn are reputed to have been laid in at the beginning of the 17th century. At the turn of the last century, it was a busy stopover on what was then the main route to London, as well as the inn of choice for local hunting parties. At the outset of the First World War it is said that the pub was used as a recruiting centre for troops, although it is not known whether this was the source of the Trooper name. Local folklore tells that a friendly ghost rides across the fields opposite the inn. The Trooper has built an enviable reputation for the quality of its food and drink, as well as for the excellent level of service and welcoming atmosphere. The bar and restaurant has recently been complemented by the opening of a new, eight bedroom, luxury hotel.
