Hampshire has some 15 Local Government Authorities covering the county and the Isle of Wight. The county has a rich mix of urban and rural areas, farmland, open countryside, cities, towns and villages, and coastal resorts. |

Hampshire County Council
The county borders (clockwise from West), Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and West Sussex. The county has an area of 1,455 square miles and at its widest points is approximately 55 miles east–west and 40 miles north–south. The county town is Winchester. The 2001 census gave the population of the administrative county as 1.24 million; the ceremonial county also includes the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton, which are administratively independent, and has a total population of 1.6 million. Hampshire is a popular holiday area, with tourist attractions including its many seaside resorts, the maritime area in Portsmouth, and the motor museum at Beaulieu. The New Forest National Park lies within the borders, as does a large area of the South Downs, which is also scheduled to become a National Park. Hampshire has a long maritime history and two of England's largest ports lie on its coast. The county is famed as home of writers Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.

Hart District Council
Nestling in the north-east corner of Hampshire lies the beautiful district of Hart-more than 84 square miles of lush green wooded landscape, heathland, common and arable land. There are a few small thriving towns and many parishes of unspoiled villages and pretty hamlets. Three small rivers cross the area on their way north to join the River Thames. One of these, the Blackwater, forms part of the boundary with Surrey and Berkshire. The Whitewater flows from the western side into the River Hart from which the District takes its name. Hart contrasts greatly with the modern growth of its neighbours Basingstoke to the west and Aldershot and Farnborough to the east. Residential and light industrial development has taken place in recent years, concentrated around the main towns of Fleet and Yateley to the north and at Hook village.

New Forest District Council

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is named after the largest town and the smallest village. The borough covers an area of over 245 square miles in North Hampshire of which over 90% is rural. The rest of the borough is made up of villages and rural hamlets and countryside and includes 47 conservation areas.
There are 16 infant, 16 junior, 26 primary and 11 secondary schools in the borough which are supported by Hampshire County Council.

Eastleigh Borough Council
Located in central southern Hampshire, the Borough is a combination of coast,countryside, quiet villages and busy towns. It stretches from Netley on the banks of Southampton Water, the historic river villages of Hamble-le-Rice, Bursledon and Botley, the developing areas of Hedge End, West End and Fair Oak and the green residential belt of Chandler's Ford. The town of Eastleigh with its excellent shopping, parking and Help Point facilities and plenty of opportunities for leisure and entertainment is the administrative and commercial centre of the Borough. With a population of over 117,000 the Borough has seen a rapid and controlled expansion in residential, industrial and commercial development over recent years.

Fareham Borough Council
The Borough of Fareham lies on the Solent coastline between the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth covering an area of almost 30 square miles and has a population of 108,000 people. Fareham Borough Council’s aim is to make Fareham a prosperous, safe and attractive place to live and work by promoting economic, social and environmental well-being and sustaining the quality of life that Fareham residents have come to enjoy.

Gosport Borough Council
Situated on a compact peninsular site, the Borough of Gosport is the most densely populated district in Hampshire, outside the two cities of Portsmouth and Southampton. The population of the Borough is estimated to be some 80,000.
Approximately 30 per cent of the Borough's land area is owned by the Ministry of Defence which also provides a third of the jobs in the Borough.
The rationalisation of the MOD establishments in the Borough has already had a significant impact on the local economy, and major historic sites adjacent to the Solent and Portsmouth Harbour are being released.

Rushmoor Borough Council
Rushmoor has a population of around 90,000 and covers an area of 3,900 hectares. The Borough of Rushmoor was created in 1974 by the combination of Aldershot and Farnborough and the military town which lay between them as well as the rapidly expanding village of Cove. Aldershot is world-famous as the home of the British Army while Farnborough's main claim to fame is the biennial International Air Show, held on the site of the birthplace of flying and aeronautical research in Britain. The eastern border of the Borough is the River Blackwater, and beyond it lies the County of Surrey. The eastern half of the Borough is entirely urban as the towns run into one another. The urban area continues into Surrey in the south (Farnham) and the east (Camberley, Ash, Frimley and Mytchett), and into Berkshire and the district of Hart in Hampshire to the north. The western half is military land but is an important open space, largely wooded, that lies between Aldershot and Fleet.

Test Valley Borough Council
The borough, named after the valley of the River Test, is predominantly rural and covers some 250 square miles with a population of approximately 114,000.
It has three main towns: Andover, Romsey and Stockbridge and many beautiful and historic villages. The River Test is world famous for it's salmon and trout fishing.

Portsmouth City Council
Portsmouth - a modern and dynamic centre attracting visitors and investment
A city that in 1994 celebrated the 800th anniversary of receiving its charter from Richard the Lionheart is undergoing a major transformation. Southampton City Council

Winchester City Council
